The largest aircraft storage and preservation facility in the world lies right here in Tucson. The Boneyard (aka 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group or AMRG), takes care of more than 4,400 aircraft. Tours through this massive facility is given through the Pima Air and Space Museum at the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, which was chosen because of our low humidity, infrequent rainfall, alkaline soil and high altitude of 2,550 feet (780 m), reducing rust and corrosion. The hard soil also makes it possible to move the aircraft around without having to pave the storage areas.
