Glen Eyrie Castle in the Garden of the Gods

We thought we left our castle exploring days back in England and Scotland but after scouring the internet for things to do in Colorado Springs, we discovered a late 19th century Tudor style castle nestled amidst the rock formations of the Garden of the Gods --and you can even spend the night there for a pretty decent price! Of course, for the price you are trading in television access and opening yourself up to potential ghostly visitors BUT YOU GET TO STAY IN A CASTLE!!!!!

The Castle at Glen Eyrie was built in 1871 by the founder of Colorado Springs, General William Jackson Palmer, an American civil engineer, soldier, industrialist, and philanthropist. He and his family resided there in luxury for about 9 years until Mrs. Palmer, nicknamed Queen, suffered from a heart attack. She and the 3 children moved to lower elevations on the East Coast, then on to England to another sumptious residence, Ightham Mote.

Glen Eyrie Castle is often used as a Christian retreat, which is probably why the rooms in the castle aren't equipped with television. If you're that starved for technology, free WiFi runs in each room but why read Facebook status updates from non-castle staying peasants when YOU HAVE NEARLY FREE REIGN TO EXPLORE A CASTLE!!!!

We explored every floor and open room. Only the main floor is well lit like this one. Other than the conference area, the rest of the castle is dimly lit and lends itself an aura of mystery. I expected to see the ghost of one of the Palmers floating around every corner.

And because it's worth mentioning, you can breakfast like royalty at Glen Eyrie Castle. THE BACON IS AMAZING.

We stopped off at the main park of the Garden of the Gods before coming to Glen Eyrie but were so put off by the crowds (and exhausted from conquering Sweaty Topless Dude Trail, more popularly called Manitou Incline) that we booked it to Glen Eyrie. Imagine our pleasant surprise at seeing the castle grounds surrounded by similar magnificent rock formations found at the main park of the Garden of the Gods.
