After coming up from Albuquerque to explore the Ludlow Ghost Town, then driving to Colorado Springs, then conquering Sweaty Topless Dude Trail (more commonly known as Manitou Incline), nothing would have been more relaxing than a room serviced dinner at Glen Eyrie Castle. But the castle’s cafe closed at 5 so off we wearily trudged to The Airplane Restaurant.
Normally we don’t post about restaurants as this isn’t a foodie blog. Give us a box of hamburger helper and we’ll call that dinner (as long as it’s cooked obviously). But the Airplane Restaurant just off of Aviation Way and Fountain Blvd is so neat, it deserves its own post of glory!
If you’re looking for fine dining, don’t come here. But if you’re a FUN human being looking for a good ol’ American fare of burgers, wings, or ribs, this place is super cool! Bring the kids! Heck, as long as you foot the bill, WE’LL bring your kids to this fun atmosphere.
The restaurant encompasses a fully intact Boeing KC-97 Stratotanker that was built in 1953 and used to refuel airplanes probably until about the 1970s when these Stratofreighters were retired, having been put out of commission by the preferred C-130s and KC-135s. Instead of going to the junkyard, this particular airplane was revived for its second mission in 2002 and was reinvented as The Airplane Restaurant.
Dining inside the actual airplane books up pretty fast, reservations are recommended. As we sort of winged our schedule for the day, we didn’t get to pig out in the airplane itself. But the other part of the restaurant & bar is pretty amazing in itself. The walls are covered with photos and memorabilia rich in aviation history. Even the wait-staff are decked out like flight attendants.
Talk to me Goose.
Diners are encouraged to explore the restaurant and check out the airplane cockpit. Of course we ran around like 5 year olds pushing buttons and sat in the cockpit.
Where the other half dine; those one-percenters who were smart enough to make reservations.
