We spent our Christmas holiday in Washington State to spend time with our loved ones. While there, we managed to explore a few historical sites. One of those sites is Fort Flagler in the Admiralty Inlet, the 3rd military installment of the "Triangle of Fire" (read our Fort Worden post here and our Fort Casey post here).

To get to our destination, we took the Coupeville Ferry to Port Townsend. We would've been pretty content for the rest of the day just riding the ferry. Living in the land locked state of Arizona has really brought on our appreciation of the ocean.

Don't worry, this post isn't all about taking the ferry.

Along the way, we happened to pass by an interesting building, which turned out to be an antique store and light museum.

Even the store's bathroom had an antique charm to it!

Fort Flagler is about 45 minutes away from downtown Port Townsend. It's the lesser visited of the 3 forts in the "Triangle of Fire".

Construction of Fort Flagler began in 1899 for the Army to protect against sea invasions.

This is Battery Henry Bankhead. The battery contained eight 12 inch mortars that had a range of 8.3 miles. These mortars were used to attack ships at their weakest point (the decks).

Battery John Grattan

It looks like at some point, possibly in the 70's, someone tried to convert the interior of Battery John Grattan into a liveable area. Perhaps as a rental?

From a distance, it doesn't look like there is a massive military installment built in the ground. Very sneaky, Americans, very sneaky.
