Fort Worden
We spent the last few days in Washington state visiting our much missed families. Usually it is cold and raining when we are up there but we were treated to perfect weather! On our 2nd day there, we visited Fort Worden State Park in the beautiful and quaint town of Port Townsend. Fort Worden is 1 of 3 forts built in the 1890's on the Admiralty Inlet. These 3 forts formed the "Triangle of Fire" to protect against sea invasions. You can see our visit to one of the other forts, Fort Casey, here.
It almost seems like a visit to Washington isn't complete without a ferry so we rode the Coupeville-Port Townsend ferry. We even got to see a sea otter on the way there!
Just outside the ferry landing:
Where my handsome husband inherited his good looks. =D
The fort is built within the ground and hills. When viewed from a distance on the water, you would not be able to tell there are armaments hiding. It's just a little sneaky...
Make sure to bring flashlights as there are plenty of dark (and dank) hallways to walk through. It's a little creepy actually...
Boo!
This battery doubles as a cinder-block home... Looks like we're back in Tucson.
Point Wilson Lighthouse
After exploring the fort, we drove around to look at the buildings. A lot of them have been converted into rent-able vacation houses. We were told that the waiting list is usually booked about a year out.
Coast Artillery Museum (1 of 2 museums at Fort Worden)
I am smaller than a missile head --this one has a reach of 25 miles!
Japanese 7.7mm Machine Gun
German propaganda leaflets dropped onto American positions... Don't you think getting these dropped on top of you would spur you into harder action instead of scaring you?

Barracks recreation
After Fort Worden, we lunched and shopped in downtown Port Townsend. It is such a quaint area --perfect for retirement.
We also stopped by Deception Pass Bridge on Whidbey Island on the way home:
