Visited husband in the Carolinas. We spent out first weekend together exploring along the coast. The first stop was Myrtle Beach, which was beautiful but during this time many of the boardwalk attractions were closed.

Our 2nd visit was Fort Fisher, close to Wilmington, North Carolina. During the American Civil war, Wilmington was one of the most important points of entry for supplies for the Confederacy. To protect these interest, construction on the first artillery batteries of Fort Fisher began in 1861. It was not until 1865 after the fall of Mobile, Alabama that Fort Fisher was under the command of the Union when it was captured by Major General Alfred Terry.

Not much is left of Fort Fisher. While we were there, efforts to restore it were underway.

Close to the fort is the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. With extra time on our hands, we stopped in to see Luna the albino alligator.
