Husband (the loveable wretch that he is) has managed to flee the brutal summer of Arizona for the 3rd time in a row. This time though, I took a week off to visit him on his DC business trip.

Our first touristy adventure was a stop I've been badly wanting to visit since I read George Washington's biography a few years back: George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate

Can you imagine the people and conversations that took place there during Washington's time?  It almost felt like walking through sacred ground.  If the walls of his estate could talk...

The estate I guess is still a working farm?  There were plenty of sheep, a few moo-cows and horseys.

After exploring the farming area and slave quarters (which is right next to the Potomac), we headed to the estate for our designated tour time.

Washington's tutor is on the right. He might not look it.... but he's really, really, really, really old.

We weren't allowed to take any photos inside of the estate for preservation reasons, but I did manage to get 1 snapshot before entering the estate. Actually, I'm sure the below photo is just a replication of what used to be there.... Anyway, you can visit their website for an idea of what an amazing piece of history the estate is (or better yet, go visit).

After our tour, we chose to lunch at the Mount Vernon Inn instead of the food court.  All the wait staff is dressed in Washington-era clothing and the food is delicious!
