The eroded cliffs and towering granite domes of the Dragoon Mountains make it a spectacular landscape to behold. And one we had yet to explore despite all the years we have been in Arizona!
Today we hiked into the Dragoon Mountains to the Cochise Stronghold divide. The trail ranges from semi-desert grasslands to woodlands to lichen–covered rock formations that have been beautifully weathered and sculptured. As you pass through the trail of towering boulders, it is easy to see why the fabled Chief Cochise and the Chiricahua Apaches used the mountains as a refuge. The rocks provided a high vantage point with excellent views of the valleys on either side of the mountains.

The Cochise Stronghold Divide trail is moderately difficult with an elevation gain of 1,026 feet. Much of it is exposed to the sun, making it an ideal hike during winter or very, very early “Spring”.
